Pride Connection Presents - Celebrating The Holidays With BPI (Rerun)

December 7, 2022

Episode Notes

This is a slightly edited version of the holiday episode we did in 2022. We will return with a new episode in 2 weeks.

This week several BPI members got together to discuss the unique obstacles we face as blind LGBTQ+ people during the holidays. We discuss everything from dealing with how our families react to our sexuality and gender identity when we get together for the festive season, to overcoming challenges with depression when everyone else seems so jolly. This episode was extremely cathartic to be a part of and we encourage you to write in with your comments at [email protected].

Pride Connection - Making Gay History; Lessons in Advocacy from the LGBTQ Community

November 23, 2022

Episode Notes

BPI partnering with Eric Marcus of Making Gay History and Miss Debbie Grubb present the first of 4 informative sessions.

Hosted by Gabriel Lopez Kafati (current BPI president and ACB Board member) this session will focus on major voices of LGBTQ advocacy; what made them stand out, working within and out of the systems and how they inspired over 50 years of strident advocacy.

Lessons of Advocacy from the LGBTQ Community. Our guest for this presentation is Eric Marcus, moderator of the podcast, Making Gay History. He will share with us his insights and experiences from the front lines from when and where it all began. We will hear the voices of many of the pioneers of the movement from his archives.
Let's learn together from their history to teach and awaken in the blindness community how to use our anger balanced with our sense of doing the right for the cause to move us forward from a place, of impotent anger, into a place of positive, unified action toward the end of making our common rights, goals and needs recognized, understood and achieved. Let's use this history of a group of individuals who risked it all to build a bridge upon which they continue to march into the light and dignity of full inclusion into American society, recognition of their diversity, their freedom of choice and their civil right to equality of opportunity to achieve their own unique visions of the American Dream. . After all, isn't this what we want? Isn't this what we have the right to?

Eric will share with us the voices of many who in his words; “Made Good Trouble” and after the presentation we will discuss how what they stood for and accomplished can help us “Make Good Trouble”

Pride Connection Presents - Fat Liberation 101

August 24, 2022

Episode Notes

This is a training that we did on zoom which resulted in an edited version released on Pride Connection. Pride Connection airs on ACB media 1 on Tuesday night at 10 PM Eastern and will be available on all major podcast catchers shortly after. We discussed fat liberation, myth busting, history and why these things are important to the LGBTQIA+ and disabled communities. Goals that were covered are:

  • Understand fat liberation as a movement (different than body positivity, self-love, body-neutrality etc.)
  • Reshape assumptions about fatness (myth busters)
  • Draw connections between fat liberation and other movements (intersectional approach for solidarity) - LGBTQ and disability justice movements.
  • Understand that fat oppression is part of Black genocide (Da’Shaun’s thesis) and that anti-Blackness is part of fat oppression.
  • Find ways to apply our conversation to daily work e.g. photos of folks of all sizes on our movement’s websites.
  • Beyond our daily work, how does diet culture and weight stigma show up in relationships with each other?

Here is a list of the resources mentioned in the Fat Lib 101 training:
